Reduce Food Waste, Save Money”: Testing a Novel Intervention to Reduce Household Food Waste

The paper “Reduce Food Waste, Save Money”: Testing a Novel Intervention to Reduce Household Food Waste” Reduce Food Waste Save Money 0919  has been published in the journal Environment & Behavior. This paper is the culmination of Dr. Paul van der Werf’s PhD household food waste research and was strongly supported by Brescia College biostatistician Dr. Jamie Seabrook and supervisor Dr. Jason Gilliland. The results show that a simple intervention that reminds people about the annual amount of avoidable food they waste ($600/year) along with some simple food waste reduction tips resulted in a statistically significant 30% reduction in food waste disposal in treatment versus control households. This intervention was developed so that it can easily be adapted by other municipalities.
